Our MSc in Financial Technology (Fintech) brings together the current knowledge and skills of Fintech industry professionals as well as academics to provide a comprehensive programme with cutting edge and latest technologies. The programme takes an integrated approach to keep you well-informed in the fields of both finance and technology in a transdisciplinary fashion.

The individual modules focus on answering the technical questions of what technological capabilities could achieve within the field of finance, acknowledging the robustness and speed at which these technologies evolve.

You will have an opportunity to visit Canary Wharf in East London, the financial hub of the world, to interact with financial technologist to witness the rapidity at which financial technologies are evolving.

You will also be able tour the London Stock Exchange (LSE) to develop further understanding on how financial engineering impacted the financial markets. One of the important visits would be to the Bank of England (BOE), wherein you will be able to interact with BOE staff to understand the role financial regulations (Regtech) play in the fast-paced Fintech industry.

Study style

The pedagogy will be problem-based learning (PBL). We will use the block teaching approach and support learners with e-learning resources apart from having regular full-time and part-time modes of delivery. Solving problems in sessions will present many opportunities for students to thoroughly explore key learning outcomes before applying them in subsequent modules. This teaching and learning approach is consistent with portfolio approach of assessment. There is the flexibility for learners to participate in designing the scope of their portfolio together with industry experts at the start of each module.

The certificate stage modules provide a solid foundation so that learners can appreciate what is possible from adopting technology-based architectures as the basis of decision-making and implementation. The hands-on approach to coding and programming will build the necessary expertise for analysing large financial, social and business-related datasets. These will undoubtedly be embedded in market microstructures so that learners can appreciate the regulatory framework and risks within which the tools and techniques will be implemented. Before they complete the certificate stage modules, learners will become aware of real opportunities and gaps in society or markets that require innovative answers.

The diploma stage modules will direct students towards understanding the nature of existing and emerging challenges for the financial services industry specifically and businesses in general. Beyond this understanding, learners will be challenged to develop original and sustainable solutions to these challenges. We will not limit the scope of these challenges to the development of algorithms for front-end services but will include the use of appropriate technology in support functions in an inter-connected market.

At the masters’ level stage, students have the choice between a dissertation and a business case analysis module. Apart from the traditional academic dissertation, students have the opportunity to demonstrate originality in creating or developing solutions to live and emerging issues in industry.

Entry requirements

  • At least a 2.2 honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject - we will consider a comparable professional or postgraduate qualification.
  • Students coming from a Finance or Technology background might be exempted from certain modules; however this will be considered on an individual basis.
  • EU and international students need IELTS 5.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent
