Cheltenham and Gloucester’s Purple Flag

Last updated: 9 March 2021

The ultimate urban accolade, a Purple Flag is awarded to a town or city that endorses the safety and wellbeing of its visitors and local residents. Doing so while it offers a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment, leisure and cultural contributions, as part of the night-time economy.

The Purple Flag status is presented by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), and was first awarded to Cheltenham in 2016. Gloucester followed suit in 2017, and both areas have successfully maintained the honour ever since.

To keep it up, new strategies are developed every year to manage the evening and night-time economy in both places. Included are initiatives to reduce crime and uphold Cheltenham and Gloucester as safe spaces for all.

The town and city’s collective Purple Flag status is supported by representatives from both Cheltenham Borough and Gloucester City Council, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, and even the University of Gloucestershire Students’ Union – among other local bodies.
