Join an engaged academic community tackling today’s cyber security challenges and build valuable professional networks while studying in our £5.8m FuturePark high-tech facility.

Our Integrated PhD is designed for ambitious students who are ready to take the next step into doctoral research without first completing a separate Master’s degree.

In your first year, you’ll study postgraduate-level modules that develop advanced subject knowledge, research methods and academic skills. This taught phase provides a strong foundation for doctoral success and a clear progression route into the PhD stage of the programme.

You’ll explore contemporary issues in cyber security and digital forensics, including network and information security, threat detection and intelligence, secure software development, malware analysis, cryptography, ethical hacking, forensic investigation, and incident response. The programme also supports research into emerging domains such as artificial intelligence (AI) in cyber defence, blockchain security, and Internet of Things (IoT) vulnerabilities.

Once you’ve successfully completed the taught element, you’ll move on to developing your research proposal with support from expert supervisors. Following approval, you’ll undertake original doctoral research, culminating in the submission and defence of your thesis.

You’ll join a thriving research community and benefit from the expertise of more than 50 academic staff. Our collaborative and internationally engaged research environment provides opportunities to build connections with researchers, scholars, and future academic leaders from across disciplines and around the world. Whether your ambition is a career in academia, research, teaching or professional practice, our Integrated PhD will equip you with the knowledge, confidence and research expertise to make a meaningful contribution to your field.

Our Integrated PhD combines structured postgraduate training with independent, supervised research, helping you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a successful doctoral researcher.

During the taught phase, you’ll learn through a dynamic mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and interactive discussions. You’ll then undertake independent study, building the critical thinking, analytical and research capabilities expected at doctoral level. Our supportive, coaching-based approach to supervision evolves with your needs, nurturing your development as an independent researcher.

You’ll work closely with leading academics from our internationally recognised computing group, who will support you in developing original and impactful research. Assessment supports your progression from taught modules to the development of your research proposal and, ultimately, the completion and defence of your doctoral thesis. You’ll also benefit from a personalised annual training plan, research seminars, conferences and opportunities to engage with research communities.

An Integrated PhD in Cyber Security prepares you for careers both within academia and across a wide range of industries. Whether your ambition is to become a university researcher, lecturer, consultant, analyst or strategic decision-maker, you’ll graduate with advanced skills that are highly valued by employers worldwide.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop expertise in research design, critical analysis, project management, data interpretation and evidence-based decision-making. These transferable skills enable you to tackle complex challenges, generate new insights and make meaningful contributions in professional and research environments.

Graduates are well positioned for opportunities in higher education, research institutes, public sector organisations, charities, think tanks and commercial businesses. The programme is particularly valuable for those seeking careers in cyber threat intelligence, secure systems design, digital forensics, blockchain security, AI-driven defence, and cyber risk consultancy.

Working alongside internationally recognised researchers will help you build professional networks and gain experience conducting impactful, original research. You’ll also benefit from opportunities to engage with wider research communities through seminars, conferences and collaborative activities. To support your career development, you’ll have access to dedicated careers guidance, CV workshops, one-to-one advice and employability resources, helping you confidently take the next step towards your chosen career path.
