Our Sports Performance degree doesn’t just prepare you for the industry, it puts you in it. In your final year, you’ll take on a placement with a professional sports club, working in rugby, football, or other high-performance environments across both men’s and women’s sports.
Here, you’ll gain hands-on experience in athlete testing, training load monitoring, sports technology, and video analysis, working alongside coaches and performance staff to enhance athlete performance.
We’ll support you in securing the right opportunity, but if you have your own connections in elite sport, you can bring your network into your placement module.
If you want to get started early, volunteer opportunities offer you the chance to build experience before your official placement begins.
As part of this degree, you’ll gain exclusive access to professional clubs and meet the experts who shape athlete performance, giving you real insight into the industry.
On a recent trip, our students visited a top rugby club, learning how their performance analysts use cutting-edge technology and data to improve game day decisions. We also visited a professional women’s football club, where we sat in on a team strategy meeting, watched training, and met the players and staff.
These trips allow you to see the high-performance world up close. You’ll discover what interests you most, network, and start shaping your future career.
Alongside our trips and networking with local professional sports teams, you’ll work collaboratively with other sport students at UoG. This enables you to build a strong professional network.
There’s also chances to get involved in new research within your chosen area, supported by our expert academics.

Our environmental chamber and physiology labs provide you with the perfect platform to understand how the human body responds to exercise.
We have top-of-the-range motorised treadmills, stationary bikes and ergometers which are paired with breath-by-breath analysis, blood lactate sampling and heart rate tracking to accurately measure cardiopulmonary changes during exercise.
We combine this with a state-of-the-art environmental chamber where we can simulate high and low temperatures and humidity to prepare athletes for extreme conditions.
Our biomechanics lab allows for three-dimensional analysis of the human body in space. Whether its via Vicon infrared range of motion capture or wearable inertial measurement units, you’ll be able to measure joint angles, angular velocities and whole-body movement with a high degree of accuracy.
These technologies can be integrated within our physiology labs, using electromyography and ultrasounds to understand electrical signalling and muscular contraction during exercise.
We have a wide range of hardware and software available to use. You’ll have access to video analysis software, portable high-resolution video cameras, and the spaces to record and analyse this footage.
These include industry-standard software such as Dartfish, NacSport, and AP Capture Towers.
Modern sports performance science doesn’t just take place in laboratories and behind computer screens.
For those interested in profiling locomotor demands or training load monitoring, we have access to a range of GPS solutions including PlayerTek+ and gpexe which, when combined with heart rate monitoring, allow you to be pitchside and understanding the load placed on athletes. This can be paired with performance analysis to understand match demands.
Our purpose-built sports arena at Oxstalls includes 3G rugby and football pitches and a state-of-the-art indoor multi-sport centre where you will be able to learn and gain experience working with UoG Sport.
Sports performance is all about working with athletes, and we provide a safe environment for you to do exactly that.
