You’ll apply your learning on placement and reflect on your experiences to develop your skills as a practitioner for children, young people and families. You’ll examine how an individual grows and develops, as well as the potential factors that might make an impact on them. Within this context, you’ll explore how practitioners engage and communicate with children, young people and families – while maintaining a professional outlook at all times.
It’s expected that throughout the course you’ll be in a placement – applying your knowledge and learning appropriately, becoming confident in your practice and ready for your next step.
The course is delivered on a Wednesday and Thursday 9.15 – 4.15 until January and then you will be on placement for 2 days a week and receive a full day of teaching from 9.15 – 5.15pm. The campus this is delivered at is Oxstalls. If you have a work-related role to this course, you may be able to use this as your placement so that you can learn and earn at the same time.
You’ll work with others when you undertake assessments and deal with safeguarding concerns. You’ll plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate a variety of suitable interventions – enabling you to consider effective evidence-based solutions as a result of your understanding of a situation. You’ll explore the specifics of working with a specialised age group in a variety of contexts to further develop your employability.
It’s planned that this course will be taught at UoG’s new campus in Gloucester city centre from September 2025.

It will bring an iconic building back to life as a modern centre for teaching, learning and community partnerships, through placements, research and outreach activity, and provide cutting-edge facilities for your course.

In order to study this course, offer holders will need to complete a satisfactory DBS and Health Clearance check.
We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants, although some entry requirements may still apply for Professionally Accredited Courses. We accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas and make offers on an individual basis.

“I’ve done this as a volunteer, as a practitioner and as a manager, and teaching students to be youth workers is an extension of this. My particular specialisms are community youth work models, residential experiences, and youth work tools as well as youth work in faith-based settings. I’m currently working on a research project investigating how communities in Gloucestershire responded to changes in youth services.”
