As practitioners and researchers, we are aware of the issues relating to the lack of physical activity associated with obesity. However, guidance given to school children on physical activity often fails to recognise the difficulties that obese children face whilst growing. Wearing a bariatric weighted suit provides a practical ‘lived in’ experience of the physical stresses and constraints for those who are at risk of becoming obese to demonstrate what could happen if they fail to take preventative action when moving into adulthood.

General FAQs

How do I know which campus to attend?

UoG has three key campuses.

Park – For Art, Computing and Cyber Security, Design, Film, Media & Television, Game Technologies, Journalism, Music, and Photography courses.

Francis Close Hall – For Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Bioscience, Criminology and Policing, English and Creative Writing, Geography, History, Illustration, Religion and Philosophy, and Sociological Sciences courses.

Oxstalls – For Accounting and Finance, Business, Education and Learning, Health and Social Care, Law, Marketing, Performing Arts and Production, Psychology and Psychological Sciences, Sport and Exercise courses.

Is parking available?

Yes, and it’s free for all open day attendees.

Oxstalls – Oxstalls campus, Gloucester, GL2 9HW

Park – Park campus, Cheltenham, GL50 2RH. Please follow signs to the main car park (entrance no. 3).

Francis Close Hall – Francis Close Hall campus, Cheltenham, GL50 4AZ

How do I reach you by public transport?

The closest railway station is Cheltenham Spa – around 20​ minutes’ walk from both campuses

Cheltenham has two Park and Ride facilities.

The closest railway station is Gloucester – around 20 minutes’ walk from campus.

Opposite the train station is Gloucester bus station where you can catch the number 94 Stagecoach bus service. It stops on Cheltenham Road, opposite the campus.

Where do I go on arrival?

Follow the welcome signs to the check-in stand where you’ll receive your programme for the day. You’ll then be able to book a campus tour and enjoy some welcome drinks while you wait for your day to get underway.

What should I bring?

Nothing. All we need on arrival is your full name to check you in, and you’ll receive a programme with notetaking space and a pen on the day to jot things down.

Can I bring friends or family?

Yes, you can bring up to two guests with you. If you’d like to bring any more, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

Will refreshments be provided?

Yes, we’ll have complimentary welcome drinks. Refectories will be open if you’d like to buy lunch or snacks, or feel free to bring something with you as there are lots of tables and benches for you to eat at.

What about dietary requirements?

There are gluten and nut-free options for you to choose from in the refectories.

What time does the day finish?

Scheduled sessions will finish around 3/3.30pm but you might stay a little later if you choose to visit off-campus accommodation and facilities.

Will I get to speak to the relevant lecturer/s?

Academics will be available to chat to at the stands in the open day hub or after the course talk when you’ll have the opportunity to ask any extra questions.

Can I look at accommodation options?

Absolutely.

Oxstalls

You’ll be able to view on-campus accommodation, plus you’ll be able to hop on our free shuttle bus to Blackfriars and Upper Quay off-campus halls where you will have a guided accommodation tour with a student ambassador. The shuttle bus will run until 4pm.

Park

You’ll be able to view on-campus accommodation, plus you’ll be able to make your own way over to our off-campus accommodation at Pittville Student Village (GL52 3JG), where our student ambassadors will be waiting to show you round.

Francis Close Hall

You can hop on a free shuttle bus to Pittville Student Village, where our student ambassadors will be waiting to show you around. The shuttle bus will run until 5.30pm

Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester

The shuttlebus to and from Blackfriars and Upper Quay off-campus accommodation runs from 11.40am – 5pm. The Sports Arena shuttle bus will leave Oxstalls at 2pm.

Park Campus in Cheltenham

There are no shuttlebuses running from Park.

Francis Close Hall Campus in Cheltenham

The shuttlebus to and from the Racecourse Park & Ride will run from 9am – 5.20pm. It will include drops to and from Pittville Student Village from 11.55am.

Is free WiFi available?

Yes. To connect to the internet, turn on the wifi option in your device settings. If you are not connected automatically, please select the network labelled _The Cloud. Not log-in details are required.

What can I check out locally when my day has finished?

Francis Close Hall

With Cheltenham town centre just a 5 – 10 minute walk away, you should definitely take a look. The Brewery Quarter has a great range of restaurants, lively bars and entertainment and a little further into town you’ll find specialist shops and cafés to explore.

Park

Just 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Cheltenham and less than 10 minutes’ walk from Montpellier, you’ll be right on the doorstep of Cheltenham’s best restaurants, scenic green spaces, bars, shops and cafés.

Oxstalls

Located in the heart of Gloucester, Oxstalls is approximately 25 minutes’ walk from the city centre giving you easy access to the city’s bars, shops, historic docks, venues and cafés.

Next to Blackfriars accommodation is Gloucester Quays where you’ll find a vast range of restaurants with waterside views and a popular designer outlet.

Sports Arena, Gloucester

Our international-standard Sports Arena in Gloucester is also open all day, where you can see our sports facilities including 3G and 4G all-weather pitches, tennis centre and hockey pitch. You can either catch our free shuttle bus from Oxstalls campus at 2pm for a guided tour, or make your own way there (Gloucester, GL1 3LT). Parking is free.

Are your campuses wheelchair accessible?

Yes. UoG is committed to ensuring that all students can access their studies and training with us, regardless of disability. If you’re coming with a wheelchair or mobility scooter, please email us at [email protected] in advance of the event so we can make sure we’re ready to show you around.

My course will be taught at City Campus. Why am I attending an Open Day at Oxstalls campus?

City Campus will be open for teaching from September 2025 but at this stage, it’s not quite ready to host an event. That’s why your open day will take place at Oxstalls Campus, also in Gloucester. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the area and explore nearby accommodation options. As part of your day, you’ll have the opportunity to tour City Campus to get a real feel for where you’ll be studying.

As your course will be taught at the new City Campus, you’re invited to book a tour on the day to see where you’ll be based.
