All around us there are millions of bacterial cells that are invisible to the naked eye but play a vital role in both health and disease. Through the use of cell dyes and high-powered microscopes, we will take a look at this otherwise hidden world to discover the distinct shapes and structures of some key bacterial species.

Wildlife crime: mammalian detectives
Mammalian hair is used as indirect evidence in different contexts, including wildlife crime. In this practical session, you’ll prepare your own slides with ‘mystery’ hair samples to study and identify under the microscope. Shrew or Squirrel? Rodent or Rabbit? Ferret or Fox? Harness your mammalian detective skills to find out.

Responses to refugee challenges
Exploring Europe’s largest refugee situation since World War II, you’ll be introduced to the issue of refugee flows in 21st century Europe and work together to propose solutions.
While offer holders take part in interactive sessions, guests can attend this Q&A session to find out more about UoG and ask questions about tuition fees and loans, accommodation options and admissions.

The biology of smell: the role of pheromones
Humans communicate with speech, but for many animals it is smell not sound that gets the message through. Through our ‘smells pack’, you’ll be armed with oddly-familiar everyday aromas to explore the fascinating world of pheromones, from lost ants to angry bees.

An accident at the blood bank means all donor blood has been mislabelled. Your task is to type each blood donation for the ABO and RhD blood type to ensure it is transfused to the appropriate patients.

Taking a climate science journey through space and time, you’ll investigate what nature should be doing now if humans were not around and, in turn, uncover what our planet may have in store for us.

In this team-based activity, you’ll explore the drama and complexities around seeking to develop interagency cooperation in order to tackle a complex global challenge.
Take a guided tour around the campus with one of our student ambassadors and immerse yourself in life as a UoG student.
Off-campus accommodation will also be available to view at Pittville Student Village until 5pm. Pittville Student Village is a hub of activity with 800 student rooms, social spaces, gym, studio and study suite.
A free bus service will be running from FCH to Pittville Student Village every 20 minutes. View the full bus timetable. You can also choose to make your own way there. Find it on Albert Road, Cheltenham, GL52 3JG.

Explore cheltenham
If you have time to spare, why not make your way into the centre of Cheltenham and get a feel for this vibrant festival town that you’ll call home.
It’s a 10 minute walk or short drive from FCH Campus and has some great options for shopping on the promenade, and plenty of places to eat and drink in the Brewery Quarter.
