Applying for a research degree

You can apply online for any of the research degrees at the University of Gloucestershire. It is an easy process and an exciting first step to becoming a research student. Prior to developing your application we suggest you take a look at our subjects and our areas of expertise in those subjects.

Our academic schools host these subjects, and illustrate the profiles of the staff and their expertise areas. It is helpful if you have already identified how your proposed research links to areas of specialism and expertise within the relevant School.

Our research priority areas also provide a good insight into areas of current research and academic expertise. If you find a staff profile of interest, you may also benefit from having a look at their research outputs in our open access research repository.

Apply online

Most research degrees can be applied for directly online using the ‘Apply now’ link on the relevant course page.

You can save your application at any time and return to it later if you want to. At this stage, your application cannot be seen by the University and can only be seen by you.

You will need to submit the following with your application:

  • Your proposal
  • Your CV
  • Copies of your degree certificates and transcripts
  • Details of your references
  • International students will need to submit evidence of their English language proficiency

Entry requirements

In order to start a research degree, your proposal will need to be accepted by your potential supervisors. This makes your proposal a crucial part of your application. For tips on writing a successful proposal, please see our guide to writing a research proposal.

Master’s by Research

  • A bachelor’s degree with honours, graded 2.1 or above in a related subject area

What happens next?

We’ll be in touch once we have received your application. This will be checked in admissions and if we require anything further then we will be in touch – we aim to respond to your application within 6-8 weeks. We will then send applications to the School Postgraduate Research Lead for review of your proposal. If there is interest from supervisors within the research group, we will then invite you to interview.

Deadlines to apply

In order to secure your place on the course, we recommend that you submit an application as soon as possible. Applications should be submitted at least one month before the course start date.

If you are an international applicant and need a Tier 4 visa, please apply two months before the start date. For more information, please see the CAS request deadlines.
