Nursing (Adult) BSc (Hons)

University of Gloucestershire

What is Nursing (Adult) BSc (Hons)?

Qualify as a graduate nurse on our new and innovative nursing degree. The course provides you with the experience and opportunities to become a graduate nurse of the future.

You can choose whether to study on-campus in Gloucester, or pursue a blended learning option with an NHS ‘Practice Pod’ of your choice in a number of locations.

Students applying for this course may be eligible for the NHS Learning Support Fund, which provides a non-repayable training grant of £5,000 per academic year.

Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, this course offers a unique pathway that focuses on a different aspect of nursing each year. You’ll gain the confidence to lead and manage yourself as a practitioner (first year), the care you deliver (second year) and the service you work in (third year).

Nursing is an exciting and rewarding profession which requires you to take care of yourself to enable you to care for others – we’ll support you to consider and maintain your own personal wellbeing and resilience within a ‘culture of care’ for both you, and people in your care.

We’ll help you develop the skills and adaptability you need to deliver high quality patient care in a range of settings, while also promoting the NHS values and vision – ensuring everyone has greater control of their health and wellbeing. Students are required to work a range of shifts during the programme (early, late and night shifts covering the full 24 hour period of care). Shifts are allocated by the placement ward department with as much notice as possible.

You’ll work in supportive teams with practice and academic experts, mentors and personal tutors. Your course is 50% theory and 50% practice and commences with a six-week introductory block with regular placements in professional healthcare settings, allowing you to work with patients, their carers and care providers.

A blended learning option for this course has been developed in partnership with Health Education England. You’ll benefit from a mix of online virtual classrooms, independent study and face-to-face learning on-campus in Gloucester.

Your practice placements will take place at an NHS ’Practice Pod’ of your choice, with Bath, Swindon or Bristol available to pick from.

This is a full-time course where you’ll learn the specific policies and procedures within the trust you undertake your placements with. You’ll build a network of local contacts and maximise your chances for successful employment there following graduation.

"Nursing is a rewarding and challenging profession"

“This innovative new curriculum has been developed to prepare future nurses to meet the needs of the changing health and social care environment. We believe that nurses working in partnership with the public, engaging in shared decision making, as part of the multi-disciplinary team is vital to meeting the individual needs of patients and their carers.”

Rachel Jefferies, Academic Subject Leader, Nursing

"Nursing has been a lifelong ambition of mine"

“When I had my interview at the University of Gloucestershire I knew that was where I wanted to go – just because the lecturers and tutors were so passionate. Last summer I did a placement in Sri Lanka, based in the historical city of Anuradhapura. I encountered patients with a number of tropical diseases which are rare or non-existent in the UK. The hospital only had limited resources, so it was interesting to see how they managed and continued to deliver patient care. Now I’m back in the UK I’m able to apply the knowledge I gained on my placement to my course.”
