Course overview

This course is for the corporate go getters, the movers and shakers, the soon-to-be titans of industry. Marketing doesn’t happen without the input of the senior managers in an organisation. You will need to speak their language and understand their needs as much as the consumers. You will have the opportunity to develop the skills to give you maximum flexibility to stand in both worlds, creativity and strategy.

Wherever your business ambitions lie, the course provides the opportunity to solve the problems faced by companies. Very often the solution is not just marketing, but requires a universal approach. Understanding the internal politics and motivations of modern organisations, as well as the what drives consumers to buy into your brand, can mean the difference between success and failure.

The course is underpinned by a deep understanding of professional practice and academic concepts.

You will draw on the expertise of lecturers with extensive professional credentials and research experience and be inspired by industry guest speakers, including those who graduated from the university. Many modules have assignments based on live briefs from national and international brands including Warner Bros, BMW and British Heart Foundation.

Outside of the classroom, you have opportunities to be involved in student-led Marketing Society and a Business School initiative called 360, which offers students the ability to consult on marketing problems and opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The course benefits from Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) accreditation, recognised by major employers, allowing you to earn a CIM Graduate Certificate or Diploma alongside your degree.

Study style

You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, group work, reflective practice, business simulations, problem-solving challenges and presenting. In your first year you’ll gain solid grounding in all aspects of business and marketing including customer behaviour, understanding organisations and the global business environment. You’ll then specialise in business, marketing, or both with subjects such as new business enterprise and e-interactivity and social media, depending on your career aspirations.

Leading international brands and business figures will deliver lectures and give real insight into how to succeed in business. Guests have included Superdry, whose marketing campaigns have seen the brand sell their products to over 100 countries worldwide. You’ll analyse real-world case studies, take part in work simulations and pitch your ideas to business experts. In your final year you’ll take part in an exciting business or marketing challenge with an international or UK brand.

“One of the great things about teaching international business is that it brings me into contact with students from all over the world."

“I love foreign cultures and languages, so this really is my ideal job. One of the highlights of my career has actually been living in Guangzhou in southern China for a year and teaching at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. I also worked with senior academics from six countries to advise the Moldovan government on the modernisation of their Higher Education sector.”
