Learn to motivate people in the workplace and discover how to influence customers to purchase products and services. In your first year you’ll gain solid grounding in all aspects of business and marketing including customer behaviour, understanding organisations and the global business environment. You can then specialise in business, marketing, or both with subjects such as new business enterprise and e-interactivity and social media, depending on your career aspirations. This will help you become a well-rounded professional understanding both the operations of a business and how best to promote it.
From 2018, the University of Gloucestershire Business School will move to a brand-new, state-of-the-art home at our Oxstalls campus in Gloucester. The £16 million development will be home to our Business, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Law and Accounting and Finance courses. Find out more about the new Business School and other developments with our virtual fly-through video and see where you could be taking the first steps towards your career in business.
As well as this, our Make It business experiences are designed to ensure that you stand out from the crowd when you graduate.
Make It international: work with businesses abroad. You will study the principles of modern enterprise from an international perspective while engaging and working with businesses in the thriving capitals of either New York or Milan - the choice is yours. New York offers the opportunity to see Wall Street, the iconic NASDAQ building and the world’s largest stock exchange. Milan offers you the opportunity to explore influential brands including Alfa Romeo, Armani and Prada and discover their strategies for success. Having global exposure will help you stand out in the job market, no matter whether you plan on having an international career or not. For this vital reason, the trip is included in the cost of your fees.
Make It real: learn from people who have been there and done it. Leading international brands and business figures will deliver inspiring lectures and give you real insight into how to succeed in global business. Guests have included Superdry, whose marketing campaigns have seen the brand sell their products to over 100 countries worldwide. Real-world application is embedded throughout your learning and you will analyse actual case studies, take part in work simulations and pitch your ideas to business experts. In your final year you will be able to take part in an exciting business or marketing challenge with an international or UK brand.
Make It happen: grow into a career-ready graduate. Work placement opportunities give you confidence to put your learning into practice and gain essential contacts. Students have worked for companies such as Warner Bros, BMW and British Heart Foundation. You will also shadow an entrepreneur, work with a corporate firm and gain experience as a shadow consultant at the Growth Hub, our business centre at Oxstalls Campus. All of this is designed to give you the skills and the CV to pursue your chosen career. Graduates have gone on to work all across the business spectrum; from starting their own businesses to working internationally for companies such as IBM.
Focus your degree on business or marketing, or both. If you choose business, you'll learn about managing people, projects and resources, finance and HR. If you choose marketing, you'll learn how to connect brands and customers. Learn through lectures, seminars, group work, reflective practice, business simulations, problem-solving challenges and presenting. Real-world case studies offer you the opportunity to build your expertise while simulations and live pitches to business leaders give you practical experience. You will have opportunities to work with leading businesses and be able to complete a work placement as part of your degree. This will prepare you to graduate career-ready.
