What is an undergraduate degree?

An undergraduate degree is typically the first academic degree that a student completes, and will often be a bachelor’s degree – such as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). There are also other types of undergraduate qualification that are available to study at university, including foundation degrees and top-up degrees. A student who is studying for an undergraduate qualification is referred to as an undergraduate student – or sometimes just an ‘undergraduate’ or ‘undergrad’.

What does an undergraduate degree cover?

Undergraduate degrees lay the foundations for academic study in higher education (university), and cover a wide variety of topics in a particular subject area. As the first academic degree to be completed in higher education, undergraduate degrees explore key concepts and introduce students to academic research and practice. An undergraduate degree typically lasts for three years, and during this time students will be introduced to a range of themes, engage in discussions and undertake research.

Who can study for an undergraduate degree?

Anyone can study for an undergraduate degree as long as they meet the entry requirements for their chosen course. The entry requirements for each of our courses are available on the course page, and usually require prospective students to have UCAS tariff points from their previous qualifications (although sometimes equivalent experience is also acceptable). Visit the UCAS website to find out more about UCAS tariff points. Students from the UK will usually be eligible for student finance if they’re studying for their first degree – visit the gov.uk website to find out more about student finance eligibility. You can also study for an undergraduate degree if you already have a previous degree or equivalent qualification, although you might not be eligible for student finance if you’ve studied before and received student finance payments.

How many undergraduate degrees are available?

There are over 100 undergraduate degree courses available for you to study at the University of Gloucestershire, spread across dozens of different subject areas. Some of our degrees are available in multiple formats, such as a Bachelor of Art (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). If you’re interested in a particular course, make sure you do your research to understand which option is best for you. If you’re still unsure, get in touch with our admissions team who will be able to support you with your application.
